Night in the Woods

Like many, many artists, I struggle a lot with insomnia. I’ve always felt more awake and active at night, which unfortunately leads to sleeping through the majority of daylight, missing appointments, and people being generally irate with me (especially when I struggle to wake up at all).

I know it’s unhealthy. I know I’m not doing myself any favours… but I also have to acknowledge that art I do during the day just isn’t as good. The first image was drawn 1 day before the second, using no new references/tools/techniques. The only difference was the time I started drawing. And I’ll be damned if there aren’t at least a couple of years of artistic development between the two results.

You could put it down to inspiration striking at odd moments, or my inability to concentrate while the rest of the world is awake, but it’s just always been this way. And as much as I stress and struggle and complain about being tired all the time, I might just to have to learn to put up with it, because I simply must draw.

So a lot of you liked and reblogged my Last of Us piece - and I mean a lot more than I expected. Here’s a quick Ellie sketch just to say… well… thanks! Looking forward to doing more~

Ellie and Riley from The Last of Us DLC Left Behind.
So glad I finally got this finished! It wasn’t a lot of work I just had other demands on my time.
I haven’t been well for a little while. Nothing serious, but now I’m back home and recovering and hopefully able to dedicate a whole load more time to drawing ^-^

Evil Elsa sketches I never finished ^ ^’

So I’ve been digging around and I found a load of sketches I’d completely forgotten about! Seemed a shame that they’d never see the light of day, so I thought I’d share a few.

Et voilà, an assortment of ladies~

Day 09 - A place you want to go or: Why I should never paint environments)
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge
The Manor of Sleep from Fatal Frame/Project Zero 3
Well… yeah. I think if I’d actually drawn out everything properly beforehand like I do with people, this would’ve worked better. I guess I can get away with it if I just call it a “sketch”. Maybe. Just.

Day 08 - A Superhero (with exaggerated proportions)
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge

Beast. Because Beast.
Yes I’m aware I’m hardly keeping up with the days… but I’m letting myself off on days where I’m really busy or drawing something else. I’ve also had a few instances of pain in my wrist so I’ve let myself off for those days too.

Day 07 - Still Life: something precious
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge
This was given to me by someone very dear to me, and I wore it at a very sad time.

Day 06 - Monster Boy/Girl Generator
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge
Been running a bit late, but here is “Burning fox girl who wears headphones and loves cherries”
The layers on this one have given me SO much grief! I need to find a work around. Or just avoid Color Burn. Remember that, future me.

Day 05 - An Emotional Scene from a Movie
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge
I kept forgetting to post this…
The film is おくりびと 「Okuribito」 or Departures in English. And no, it’s not a love story. Go watch it.

Day 04 - A crappy job
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge
I finished this one late last night. I gave myself permission to skip a day due to being ill.
This is actually based on a guy I saw sitting outside Brighton station one day. He did not look cheery.

Day 03 - An Insect
From my 30 Day Drawing Challenge.
Well this was a bit of a mess. I started out drawing a dragonfly but huuugely underestimated how long it would take me to do it in the level of detail I wanted. So here’s a scarab instead. Shame really, I was so hyped for this one.
Retrospectively I’d have preferred to do something a bit more stylised, but variation is a good thing in this project and I hadn’t really drawn a beetle before.
